Hey guys, today I’ll be posting both my best and worst books of 2018. Over the year, I’ve read 64 books which is over my target of 40. I’ve read 25,804 pages and on average my ratings were 4/5 stars. This year I’ve read some pretty amazing books, some I didn’t even think I’d enjoy and also some pretty disappointing books that I had a lot of high hopes for.
This first post will focus on my least liked books of the year so without further-ado…
Book 1 – Kiss, Kill, Love Him Still Trilogy
The Kiss Kill Love Him Still trilogy by Dawn Rae Miller just wasn’t for me. I didn’t really care for any of the characters and none of them were really likeable. For a story that was supposed to be set around college/university students, it was so immature/high school behaviour for me. The characters acted like young teenagers rather than the college age they should’ve been and it just didn’t sit well with me. The one thing I will give the author is that she knows how to keep you engaged because although I didn’t want to keep going, I had to to find out who murdered Jackson. On average for the whole series I rated it around 2 stars. You can find a full synopsis here.
Book 2 – Hocus Pocus & The All New Sequel
I had so much high hopes for this as I absolutely adore the movie and so, was really looking forward to reading the novelisation and sequel. Now don’t get me wrong, the novelisation of the film was pretty spot on and I’m pretty sure they even used the dialogue from the film which was great. However, there was a twist to the original story which I feel they’ve only done in order for them to be able to produce the sequel. For me, this whole thing should’ve been completely left alone. The sequel was just awful for me. The Sanderson Sisters were extremely annoying rather than their funny, sassy selves, I didn’t really enjoy any of the plot and I just couldn’t enjoy the characters either which was disappointing. Overall this got 2 stars from me. You can view the full synopsis here.
Book 3 – The Sandman Vol 1: Preludes & Nocturnes
I’m super disappointed with this. Towards the end of the year I decided I wanted to try and read more graphic novels/comics and it’s definitely a goal I have for 2019. The Sandman Volume 1 by Neil Gaiman was one of the first ones I picked up to read and I’m so sad that I couldn’t get into it as I read The Graveyard Book earlier in the year and really liked that. I found it very confusing for the most part, I didn’t really like any of the characters and the story was just too staggered at parts for me. Again this only received 2 stars and you can check out the full synopsis for the book here.
Book 4 – Leah On The Offbeat
After reading Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, I had such high hopes for this book and reading a story from Leah’s point of view. However, I now wish I didn’t bother. This book really made me dislike Leah and I was so sad as I enjoyed her character in Simon’s story. The main reason I disliked her was the fact that she was a bitch to pretty much everyone. Now I get that sometimes people can do things to annoy you/get on your nerves and that may cause you to snap at them but for Leah, the majority of the time there was absolutely no excuse. She was really mean to her mother and at one point when her mum surprised her with the dress she liked for prom her automatic response was to phone her and be all like “WHAT THE HELL IS THIS???” rather than just be thankful and grateful for the gift. I also hated how horrible she was about her mum’s relationship with Well’s. I get that it can be hard seeing your parents with someone else other than each other but her attitude towards Well’s and the way she treated him was just awful. The way she was towards her friends was disgusting as well and there’s no excuse anyone can use to defend her actions. She was just a very flawed and mean character and for this reason it completely ruined the book for me. Therefore, it only received 3 stars from me. Check out the full synopsis here.
Book 5 – Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina #1
Again, going with the fact I wanted to read more graphic novels/comics then I ended up downloading this for my Kindle. I have yet to watch the Netflix series but decided I would wait and try and get round to reading the comics first. I really wish I didn’t bother. I just couldn’t really get into the story. Now it may be unfair to rant just now because it could possibly be that I wasn’t in the mood for it and it probably would’ve been better reading it with a physical copy rather than eBook. However, like I said, I just couldn’t get into the story and didn’t find myself really engaging with any of the characters so I only gave it 2 stars. Maybe one day I’ll try again with it, we’ll see. Head over to Goodreads for more information on the book itself.
